For any biker who appreciates scenery – second only to that rumble of a motorbike! – you can’t really get much better than Costa Rica as a biking destination. This is a country that is renowned for its beauty. 75% of Costa Rica is filled with rainforest, and its strong conservation efforts have meant that the landscapes and wildlife are virtually untouched.

According to a recent study, Costa Rica is actually the happiest country on Earth, and we’re almost certain that study asked all the people who had biked there! But if you’re fancying a trip around the magnificent coastlines and stunning volcanoes, what exactly are the best routes to take? Well, there are many, but if you want a once-in-a-lifetime trip that takes you through all the best sites of the country, then we think we’ve got the routes for you:

Arenal Volcano

When people think of Costa Rica, people think of volcanoes. Or, at least, we certainly do! Costa Rica is renowned for its stunning, monstrous volcanoes – many of which are still active… gulp – and so there’s no chance you can go on a motorbike trip in the country without seeing a few of them. One of the best to tour around – with one of the easier routes – is Arenal Volcano.
This volcano is over 4,000 years old, and its last eruption took place back in 1968, meaning access to the volcano itself is off-limits. Trust us when we say, however, that you can still feel the heat! In fact, if you get a little too hot, you can even ditch the motorbike for a while and try out some boat rentals in Costa Rica instead. This volcano is also famous for its huge, fifty-mile lake that resides just beneath it! A perfect way to cool off before you travel to your next destination.

Drake Bay

Let’s be honest, if you’re travelling to Costa Rica on your motorbike, you’re going to want a few coastlines. There are easier ways to get to Drake Bay than driving, but travelling through the towering rainforest, luscious green meadows and quaint farming villages is a trip you will never forget.
Not to mention, the panoramic views of the ocean when you get there make the trip more than worthwhile. You can even try out a bit of Costa Rica whale watching, provided you are travelling during their peak season!

The Monkey Trail

Lastly, wildlife is, of course, another huge part of Costa Rica’s personality. Around half a million species are said to live in this country, which amounts to 5% of the estimated species in the world! One of the best – and most mischievous – of these species are the monkeys, and you might just spot a few of them if you take this next route.
The Monkey Trail in Costa Rica is one of the routes in Costa Rica that aren’t for the faint of heart. In fact, it’s more of a hiking trail than a road, which is part of the reason motor enthusiasts find it so fun! If you choose to go for this one, you’ll be taken down bumpy rock faces, dense jungles and incredible rivers which run all the way to the Pacific coastline. Just make sure, if you do come across any monkeys, don’t let them have a go on the bike! Trust us when we say they really are a menace…
