Hi from northwest England, UK

Hi! I've been looking at the HUBB for years and have finally decided to join!

I'm 31 and live in East Lancashire in the Northwest of England, UK

I first got interested in overland motorcycling when I watched the long way round and long way down. Before that I was interested in over landing on four wheels but two wheels looks more exciting to me! Also loved the programmes mondo enduro and terracirca which are arguably better than the former two as they were normal people with a normal budget and rode more affordable bikes. Watching these made me think "I'm capable of doing that!"

My dream is, in about ten years, to ride to Mongolia and maybe further. The thing that will restrict me will be money, if I can afford to go further I will!

Prior to this dream I want to do plenty of shorter trips. Starting in the UK obviously then venturing out into Europe. I particularly want to explore Eastern Europe.

So what have I done to prepare for any of this? We'll not a lot really! Like I said I've been looking on this site for years and read many amazing and inspiring ride tales. I passed my full motorcycle licence about four years ago but only had a bike for about two of those years due to a relationship breakup. I'm an excellent car driver and have 'done' car driving as far as I can. There isn't really anything more I can do to be a better car driver but there's plenty for me to learn on a bike. Some skills are transferable but there is plenty for me to learn and I am desperate for experience! Currently looking at doing my advanced motorcycle training and test but nothing beats experience after some of this training.

Unfortunately I don't know many people with motorcycles and I would like to go on trips with a parter. Luckily my younger brother has got into motorcycles and we are planning our first trip this summer. We plan on riding around Wales, UK.

Thanks for reading and hope I haven't bored you!

Rick

Forgot to put, I've currently got a Kawasaki ER500. I love the idea of riding smaller engine bikes and feel a 500 is plenty of power for what I need. I also like getting plenty of MPG! I've serviced it well and it sound mechanically, although a bit tatty cosmetically. I've fitted a braided brake hose to try and improve the notoriously poor brakes, a screen, fenda extenda and a loobman chain oiler which I am pleased with.

I've previously had a few scooters, an aprilia rs125 and a Kawasaki GPZ500s.

Membership - help keep us going!

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.

You don't have to be a Member to come to an HU meeting, access the website, or ask questions on the HUBB. What you get for your membership contribution is our sincere gratitude, good karma and knowing that you're helping to keep the motorcycle travel dream alive. Contributing Members and Gold Members do get additional features on the HUBB. Here's a list of all the Member benefits on the HUBB.
