Chic Chick Travel....
... is the name of one of my talks at Overland Expo in TWO WEEKS! Does anyone have any cool tips they'd like to share? Yes, I know I could put this on the ladies pages, but thought it would be more fun here as I'd love feedback from men too. ;-) So feel free to share anything you've learnt which makes women travel easier.

Make life easier
I keep trying to persuade my wife to change her hair style to make it easier while on the road and save 30% on luggage volume by removing such things as hair straighteners/brush/bigger brush/smaller brush/volumising spray ( what ever that is? ) and so on...................

In twenty five years it's been received quite well, I lived to see another day each time it was suggested !

Volumnising spray is to make her hair bigger, so her head has a snugger fit in the helmet. Maybe you should do the same?

Question strange....
In a world where women have fought so long and hard for equality, ( and quite rightly too) I never cease to be perplexed by posts reinforcing this constant need for 'special' treatment.
Traveller's needs are virtually the same the world over irrespective of sex.
Damned if we do and damned if we don't!

Bertrand, I TOTALLY agree, travel for the most part is travel, no matter what the gender.
But there are a few subtle differences that maybe you can advise? Your opinion on using the birth control pill to control menstrual blood flow? Is this a good idea or not? Or if you'd prefer the Shewee or another urinary devices? And what's been your experience using a hijab in Egypt? Or maybe... you don't even cover up at all????

G'day Lorraine,

Just get out there and do it, keep it real, low key, get reliable gear & insurance, keep the gear to a reasonable minimum, take spares, ride the road less travelled and always stop where bikes congregate. The reception and friends you will find will blow you away, as it has done me.

Wrong to answer a question with a question I know, but what's with the hand bag thing? My wifes bike gear has pockets Houdini would never have thought of, yet we have to carry some lump of Haute Couture round.

The tip, if there is one, is as well as finding a bag that meets your needs for keeping your perfectly good pockets empty while walking round, also find something like a sandwich box that fits inside. When riding, the box (we use it to hold batteries and chargers) makes better use of the volume and keeps the bag in shape. There is then only the minor hassle of getting the lippy, money, hair straightners, collection of interestingly shaped lead weights etc. out of the pockets and into the bag when we arrive somewhere.

Andy, I'm not the person to ask. I'm not a handbag carrier and am often as perplexed as you by what many women put into those dark depths. I WOULD like to know however, what brand of moto gear your wife wears that gives so many pockets. Pockets imo, are the way to go.

Having said that, your solution of putting big handbag into a lunch box is... well, great! I'll certainly be passing that tip on, taaaaa!!!!

I have long hair but don't share the need to take hair straighteners and other such paraphenalia but each to their own. If it makes someone happy to carry a specific item, then so be it. Asking someone to chop off their hair just to save on hairbrushes etc is a tad controlling in my opinion.
I like the idea of carrying stuff in a tupperware box

Karens kit is the old Hein Gericke/Horrible Gherkin (however you spell/pronounce it) Tuareg stuff bought as end of line because it fitted despite being "man shaped" (she's tall). Pockets are five round the middle (one probably meant for a water bladder), two chest and one inside, hand type in the trousers, "bum" and knee. Most of the stuff in there is actually inner gloves, buff, boot liners, tissues and so forth that pad it out. Hard stuff like lip balm is a concern but I would say that tends to go in the chest pockets. Don't know if this is safer but seems it.

Another possible tip; Is the key to getting blokes kit to fit having a belt on both the trousers and jacket and using the inner layer to seal any gaps resulting from pulling it in? Maybe only fine if you are 5 foot 9 and think 30 C with a wind chill from 40 mph movement is still cold?
