Safety for a woman in East Africa

Hoping to get some first hand recent info of travelling down the East side of Africa (Cairo to Cape Town). Concerns over safety of my girlfriend especially, as have been told by a few people that risk of rape is high. Is this the case? (Egypt, Sudan, Ethiopia, Kenya, Tanzania, Zambia, Botswana, South Africa).

Any help or advice would be hugely appreciated.

Btw, we will be on bicycles. Thought you guys may have some tips / insight?

James.

This question was also asked by the OP in the women's topics section and received a few more answers which I think you should look at goodcat, note the responses from people including women who have actually been there.

Stunned, absolutely gobsmacked by this question ...

I am female, I spend a lot of time wandering around West Africa alone (which apparently is incredibly dangerous with terrorists and a new threat of Ebola ).

East Africa is generally quieter but for some mad reason the whole continent of Africa is getting bad press.

Unless you want to cross Libya on your way, there's absolutely no problem for women, generally I find myself more respected that men when I'm travelling!!!

Lots of travellers doing it all the time. Use common sense, you'll be fine. There is a whole community of over landers criss-crossing all the time, you'll get tons of advice and info as you go along

Membership - help keep us going!

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.

You don't have to be a Member to come to an HU meeting, access the website, or ask questions on the HUBB. What you get for your membership contribution is our sincere gratitude, good karma and knowing that you're helping to keep the motorcycle travel dream alive. Contributing Members and Gold Members do get additional features on the HUBB. Here's a list of all the Member benefits on the HUBB.
