xtz 750

I know absolutely nothing about these!

Can anyone give me a bit of detail, whether they'd make a decent overland bike reliability, weight, off road capability?

Doesn't look to be an issue with fuel range as the tank seems huge!

The one I'm looking at is a late 80's thing!

thanks 8)

I have never owned one and have only ever met one person travelling on one, a Swiss chap who rode his to India in 1994 at the same time I was headed that way. He reported no problems with it and a friend who owned one reported none either but a colleague at work had one and said that he had engine problems due to poor oil circulation, just one persons negative experience though.

This was the first big trail bike I ever owned, back in 1990, after 20 years of riding mainly a succession of Brit bikes as well as 3 Harleys. My buddy who had a KLR turned me onto big trailies after I rode with him down to Portugal one year and I realised what excellent touring bikes they make.
The XTZ was a very reliable bike and easy to work on, not that I needed to do much work on it. It was also easy to ride, with a good fuel range and was only let down by a very uncomfortable seat, the worst I have known on a bike of this type. I have been riding big trail bikes ever since.
I sold the XTZ after about a year and bought a Cagive Elephant 900ie, which was an excellent bike. I rode it to Morocco and the Western Sahara in 1991, the only trouble I had was a clapped out clutch release bearing. The Cagiva was a fine bike, but it's Ducati desmo engine was too much of a maintenance chore for the high milages I do, so I bought a BMW R100GS PD, which I've had since 1995 and done 365000 miles on. It's the best bike I've had by far and I've no intention of selling it.

How tom
The xtz is a mile muncher great on the highways, not the most comfy of big trail bikes but very reliable, I'm sure I've seen on here somewhere loads of info if not look for the super tenere site, its a bit clumsy off road but manageable, I use the ultra reliable 1984 xt600 also have the 1985 xt600 tenere the single light.
You got it for a good price m8 so enjoy

Membership - help keep us going!

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.

You don't have to be a Member to come to an HU meeting, access the website, or ask questions on the HUBB. What you get for your membership contribution is our sincere gratitude, good karma and knowing that you're helping to keep the motorcycle travel dream alive. Contributing Members and Gold Members do get additional features on the HUBB. Here's a list of all the Member benefits on the HUBB.
