Need information on the Horizons Unlimited Germany event May 14-17.

Hi:

I store my VStrom at Stefan Knopf's house in Heidelberg, Germany. I will be flying from the U.S. to pick it up in early May to do a summer of riding down into Spain, Portugal and Morocco. I see that there is an Horizons Unlimited event in Germany starting just a day after I arrive (May 14-17). I see on the map that it is going to be just a few miles from Stefan's house, and I am thinking about going to the meeting. I attended a similar HU event in England three summers ago and I thought it was fantastic, but all the presenters at that event spoke English. Does anyone know if the presenters at the Germany meeting in May will be doing their presentations in German (a language that I am not at all proficient in) or will there be presenters in English as well?

One things for sure the Beer will be in German and Excellent, The people will mainly be German and again excellent - that said even if some of the meeting was done in German it really wouldn't matter lots of people will speak English and help you along and it would be great to be immersed in a cultural and language situation where you are a little unsure of whats being said and why - just drink a few more s - it would all make perfect sense in the end.

I think if you can go - no matter the language barrier - you would miss out by not going.

Quick language lesson to learn on the flight over

One Beer Please - Ein Bitte, Two Beer please - Zwei Bitte (W pronounced V),

Thanks - Danke shon , Please - Bitte,

I am Hungry - food please, Ich bin Hungrig - essen sie Bitte

Seems that's you sorted have a great time.

That's a good one ;o)
"essen sie bitte" is rather more a command that someone should eat....
But the rest is quite comprehensible.

@Ron, I agree with Jake. You should go to the meeting. It is international, many presentations are in English. Most people speak English.

HI Vaufi - yep my Germans quite basic a bit rusty and a bit confused at times.

I can speak a bit and sort of get bye - often with very large smiles from German people who seem to love the fact I try.

But often even i know i must sound like I'm talking inside out, back to front and upside down as well as ordering rather than asking. Its a Hoot trying and we end up laughing - it just breaks the ice and is good fun.

Jake.

I also have a mc stored at Stefan's and my wife and I went to last year's event and had a wonderful time camping and riding. I even gave a couple presentations. I heartily recommend that you go.

Thanks Timmer: I wonder if you and I have crossed paths there at Stefan's house. I am planning on going to the German HU event in May, and I have offered to do a presentation of my ride from Wyoming to Alaska.

I don't know. We ride a red R1200GS. Last summer we spent 6 weeks riding Spain and Portugal (fabulous) and we're planning to do 6 weeks in the UK in May/June this year.

Btw, the Germans really like ride report presentations about off pavement riding in the US as that's something most can't experience.

I think I would probably remember you if we had met at Stefan's. I will be at his house to pick up my VStrom on May 13 which just happens to be just in time for the HU event near Stefan's house. I guess I do have some off road tales and pictures I could do, but what I am down for is my Wyoming to Alaska trip. There will be a lot of wildlife pictures (something else that the Germans do not get to see a lot of). I am going to leave after the meeting and head down to Spain, Portugal and Morocco for the summer. I hope it is not too hot.

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.
