Buying a motorcycle /scooter in Greece.. May 2019

Looking for advice on how to do it. Ideally a smaller scooter like SYM 200 Evo.. Rather buy used and hope to ride back to Germany over the summer months... Up to 1500 €

I have EU/ UK passport.. Aware of brexit.
Residence in Germany
I have a motorcycle licence.. I have an international driver's license. I have German tax ID. And UK if it matters..

How to register?
Is it even possible?
Who with and how to insure?

Easier to buy in other Balkan country?

Any other advice..

I have checked thru Hubb for this kind of question but yet to fi d.. I've also seen info about needing a residency in Greece but hoping Europe residency is enough

Be aware that VAT in Greece is very high.

You might want to research the various levels of VAT that apply to vehicle purchases in that area of the world (i.e. compare with vehicle VAT in the former Yugoslavian countries) before you elect to buy your vehicle in Greece.

You're a little late for that ....

Anyway, In some countries there's some kind of arrangement involving export plates valid for the time it takes you to ride home and register there, however it is not a uniform EU thing at all. Temporary registration is easy and cheap in Slovenia where I live , but over the border in Italy you can only buy a vehicle if you're a resident with tax registration. No idea at all about Greece, but it's probably worth checking.

One thing that is the same throughout the EU however, is that no VAT is payable on second hand vehicles that more than six months old and have covered more than 6000 km

What I'm really wondering though is why you can't just buy in Germany where there's a vast market of well maintained bikes, presumably including the one model of scooter that you seem set on getting, and where you can already register as resident without problems.

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.
