Crossing Myanmar from India to Thailand - May 2015

Hello everyone!

This is Jorge from Spain.
I am travelling by motorcycle around India and want to cross Myanmar to Thailand.
My indian tourist visa is expiring in 3 weeks, I know is a little bit late, but I am looking for any group crossing Myanmar this month of May 2015, or creating a new one if there is someone interested travelling in India by now.

Contact UFO in Moreh at sanja heibam (at) gmail dot com he lives there and can help you fix things. Around the corner is the local bike club so in case you need something fixed it's good too. Also, he'll let you stay for free and feed you.
I've spend a few days and it was good. The downside? A cold shower at 6 or no breakfast!

Hello there!

I am now planing my trip across Asia and my route includes India-Burma-Thailand overland as well.
A lot of forums and blogs got me a bit confused, as some say it is possible while the others do not agree.

If you have any information about those boarder crossings right now and/or if you know the solutions,
I would love to receive the help!

It is possible but it requires a lot of "red tape" and a lot of €€€. Carnet is neccesary for India and both Thailand and Myanmar requires permits and mandatory guides along your travel through the country. Especially Thailand has put a whole lot of ridicioulsy paperwork such as IDP from the 1949 convention, and not from the 1968 convention, up to date proof of roadtax paid in your home country, up to date roadworthiness sertificate - and all must be translated into english by a verified translator etc etc.

But it is possible...

You dont need a group to pass through neither Myanmar or Thailand but you will need a guide, permits + lots of paperwork done. But if you are doing it alone it will be very very expensive. So for the economical benefit it will be better to do it in a group. Or to ship your bike from India/Nepal to Malaysia.

By group I mean the guide who asists you all across the country.
But I thought it was only for Myanmar???

Well - rumours started to fly more than a year ago, and 27th of June last year they thai authorities started to implement their new rules and since that they have kept on adding requirements for travellers. Guides are now mandatory and last chance to get a permit without guide requirement was 23th december.

If you havent heard about this at all I suppose one can say you havent done youre homework quite well....

The pinned post in the Facebook-group I advised you about two weeks ago should have it all when it comes to information about the new rules and regulations for overlanding Thailand in a foreign vehicle.
