Ferries Malaysia - Indonesia - How? - Horizons Unlimited

I've just tried 3 ports (Melaka, Luggi & Georgetown) here in Malaysia to get me & my Dommie to Sumatra. I'm no problem, the Dommie is however. Apparently all boats that do this very regular shuttle run are passenger only affairs. I've been told I can put it on a freight boat & then travel by passenger ferry myself. I'm not allowed on a freight boat am I'm not happy with this scenario. How have others overcome this?

Cheers Grant, but this was the option I was trying to avoid. These vegetable boats, like all freight boats, do not allow passengers. It's an Indonesian thing according to the Malays. I was hoping someone may have wangled a way around it.
Anyway it seems that this is the only way. So I look for a fresh fruit boat rather than Mr Duval's onion job. I really don't want it all to end in tears you understand.

Oh, I was told there was a car ferry from Penang four years ago but it was stopped as uneconomic.

Here are the details of a very helpful shipper for Georgetown to Medan and also the cheapest I could find - 250 Rinngit roughly $80 and he did all the paperwork for me. Lovely guy and his boats leave on Monday and Thursdays, probably best to bowl up the day before.
