In La Paz, I met a super friendly and helpful gentlemen. He owns/manages the Suzuki, Royal Enfield dealership. He also has used motos and know a lot of people in the moto community.

BEWARE of purchasing a used moto in South America unless it costs MORE THAN $8,000 USD or from an organization that knows the full history of the bike!

1) Most motos in SA are not used for long travel. Therefore the maintenance done to most motorcycles is minimal and only when things break. MANY even have welded gears inside the transmission! I kid you not! Imagine what that will do to you doing 100 kph passing a truck on the highway or on a cusrve with a 1,000 meter drop off!

2) Most motos in SA, if valued at less then $8,000 USD, when purchased 2nd hand, never get the paperwork transferred to the new owner. That means that YOU can't get it changed to your name as the one selling it is not really the 'owner'.

I've bought three bikes in Chile Bolivia and Perú all under $2000 usd. Always with papers, all three bikes are good, never had a problem.

Membership - help keep us going!

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.

You don't have to be a Member to come to an HU meeting, access the website, or ask questions on the HUBB. What you get for your membership contribution is our sincere gratitude, good karma and knowing that you're helping to keep the motorcycle travel dream alive. Contributing Members and Gold Members do get additional features on the HUBB. Here's a list of all the Member benefits on the HUBB.
