Sayonara Sahara?

Bonjour All,

What's the current opinion on the Sahara? Is it completely impassable through the central routes shown on Chris's site:

https://sahara-overland.com/routes/

I've been thinking about forming a four-man team to cross the desert from north to south toward Mali/Timbuktu. Hardship I can deal with, but I draw a firm line at getting shot at!

It might be a few years before that might be possible. Crossing Algeria is possible but with some limits imposed by gov't. But you can't cross the Mali border. Nor would you want to. Northern Mali is not a happy (or safe) place now.

Actually, in the sense of traversing the country from one border and exiting via another then crossing Algeria is not currently possible for tourists.
Only official and secure border apart from sea ports is Nefta - Taleb Larbi. Our bikes crossed that way yesterday. All other land borders closed to foreigners, afaik.

But if you don't mind the escort you can have a whole lot of fun exploring what is permitted off road in; a relatively tiny but spectacular area (pix below).

Otherwise, as Tomek suggests, head for RIM and PFZ to DIY.

Membership - help keep us going!

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.

You don't have to be a Member to come to an HU meeting, access the website, or ask questions on the HUBB. What you get for your membership contribution is our sincere gratitude, good karma and knowing that you're helping to keep the motorcycle travel dream alive. Contributing Members and Gold Members do get additional features on the HUBB. Here's a list of all the Member benefits on the HUBB.
