Leaving / importing a motorcycle into Iceland

Does anyone know about leaving a motorcycle in Iceland permanently? Import duty/taxes/legalities?

A friend looked briefly into this. This is second-hand information: You can bring in a motorcycle for traveling without paying a lot ... however, once the bike has been here for a year you have to pay taxes and tariffs as if you were importing and registering - probably about €3000 on top of a €5000 motorcycle.

Or so they say!

Sorry I should have been more specific.

The web site defines what is a temp import and confirms certain temp imports are except from duty, therefore in bureaucratic double speak....what is not considered a temp import, duty will apply. Off on the side following link procedual aspects of importing to iceland you can find a link for vehicles and a small section quoted here;
Importation of Vehicles

Customs clearance of imported vehicles is different for each of the following situations:
  • A new or used vehicle bought into the country
  • A vehicle with an Icelandic registration number imported back into the country (Icelandic travelers)
  • A vehicle with a foreign registration number imported to the country along with household effects
  • A vehicle with a foreign registration number temporarily imported into the country (foreign travelers)
It then goes into a how lot of complicated guff but in short its sounds very confusing on how the duty is calculated and they suggest you contact them and provides an link to an email address.

I did have a look at the english version regulations Chapter 87 of the custom tariff but gave up as it is as confusing as any Australian peice of regulation. Designed to entrap rather than educate.

Cheers
