Denmark
Due to husbands work changing his school term contract to shifts and him only being allowed to take 2 weeks off at the summer we've decided to go and see Denmark! Ferry is booked!

We know that it's expensive so any money saving tips are most welcome as are must see places or roads!

Camping... you'll save money if you get a camping pass. Steer clear of hotels, they are expensive.

Things to see; humm, good question - Hans Christian Andersen's house/museum in Odense, Rundetårn in Copenhagen, the west coast of Jutland (which I miss). Randers Regnskov (in my hometown), and lots of other things...

Expensive?
I suppose its all relative really. I was in Denmark (parts of) last October and did not find it expensive. Accomodation was similar in price to that of the Netherlands, Germany, and Austria. Food cost were cheaper than that here in Australia.

I found that a Lonely Planet gave me some great info on what to see and where to stay.

If you go to Odense check out the sysbols of Hans Cristian Anderson on the Walk/Dont walk lights at pedestrian crossings.

Every where I went I found the Danes to be very helpful and willing to put up with my silly attempt at speaking some of the language.

Egeskov on Fyn is one of the few original water castles left in Europe.
The staterooms etc. are open, there is an agricutural-, horsewagon-, car- motorcycle museum.

The danish National Museum i København is really worth a visit. They have a lot of stone-, iron, viking age artifacts, the best Greenland collection in the world but also collections from the pacific etc.

The Moesgård Museum, near Aarhus has the Grauballemand, who is a 3000 old years moor corpse naturally embalmed and hundreds of iron age weapons and private stuf, from a conquered army, sacrified to the gods in a moor.


The Viking Ship Museum in Roskilde has five vikingships found in the fjord into which the museum is built.They have an exact copy of the largest vikingship(warship) ever found, build with traditional methods and materials, on their own experimental wooden ships shipyard.
You order a ship or just go sailing in one.

At last you have decided on the destination :-).

This would me on my list for Denmark Øresund Bridge I love bridges, high, long, beautiful or ugly all bridges in my opinion are worth a visit and this is the longest road & rail bridge in Europe.

We have a few more 18km Storebæltsbro and New Lillebæltsbro, but the Storebæltsbro cost around 30 euro to pass.

Grenen is the most northerly point in Denmark but also where two tidal parts of the North Sea meet. Only here at this point.

Hi everyone,

Thank you all so much for your suggestions... and sorry that I've not been online to thank you all sooner!

casperghst42 - will check out the camping pass as we always camp... it's always sooooo much cheaper. And we only stay in a hotel for the last night!

Quandary - I was in Denmark years ago on a music tour and found it expensive then... especially the ! Will also look out for the symbols of Hans Cristian Anderson in Odense. And yes... speaking the language will be fun!

pbekkerh - That castle look amazing... definately on the list! And will check out the Marguerit rute, what a great idea! Vikings are also on the list... don't think we could do Denmark without them! The mummy however looks a bit scary!

Milimut1 - Yip... eventually decided! Yes... those bridges look rather amazing!

roadruns - That could be interesting, especially if it's windy... might get to see some big sea horses!

dave08 - intreaging area... don't think that the UK would let a huge rent free living area!

Time for some more reading and planning so that we get the most out of Denmark! Yay!

I think he found it a bit scary as well. He had his throat cut from ear to ear. He was probably sacrificed to the gods. Its probably the best preserved bog mummy in the world. Hair, nails, beard stubs and the last food he ate, is preserved. It was possible to determine that his hair was cut and he shaved 3 weeks before he died. He had arthritis and gum infections, even his fingeprints are quite clear.

"How old is he?"
"3006 years"
"How can you be so sure?"
"Well, he was 3000 years old, when I came here and I've been here for 6 years now"

We have another bog mummy in Silkeborg. He was hanged 2500 years ago.



Moesgård has a collection of viking runicstones and thousand of relics from big battles in the iron age about 2500 years ago




In Jelling, we have the "birth certificate" of Denmark. Two runicstones set about year 960 by the first danish king, a viking, Gorm den gamle (Gorm the old) and his son Harald Blåtand (Harald Bluetooth). On one of the stones is the oldest inscription with the name Danmark and a viking picture of Jesus, as christianity just arrived around this time
