Question looking for a bike in NZ to rent or buy december-january

Hi!

I'm going to spend 2 months in NZ, starting end of november in Auckland.

The idea was to rent or buy a motorbike to travel all around NZ, but I don't know wich one is the best option..?!?

If buying, how does it work with plate, insurance, different documents, ..? :confused1: Is it easy to do? (I'm from europe, Switzerland)

What about re-selling afterwards? I'm just afraid to not be able to sell it in time before flying home..

And renting, probably way too expensive..?

Any useful website?

Sorry, I've never done this, and I'm really excited about this adventure but so confused..! :helpsmilie

Cheers, for any advice you could give me :

For bikes look at www.trademe.co.nz - local ebay type site.

It's fairly easy to buy a bike to travel on, you need to supply ID & an address to transfer the ownership (use address of your hotel etc) Also the bike needs a current WOF safety inspection sticker & a current vehicle licensing tag (commonly known as registration or rego) Insurance is not required but 3rd party is a good idea & fairly cheap to get.

See the NZTA website for details on WOF, rego, ownership transfer etc.

Cheers
Clint

Membership - help keep us going!

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.

You don't have to be a Member to come to an HU meeting, access the website, or ask questions on the HUBB. What you get for your membership contribution is our sincere gratitude, good karma and knowing that you're helping to keep the motorcycle travel dream alive.
