Yamaha XTZ 660 (3YF) Starter Clutch Prob!

Hi all,

I bought a XTZ 660 recently 1991 model, after a few months the clutch went which has been changed and noticed it was very low on oil so this was replaced also. Since this the starter clutch is slipping and won't give enough purchase to turn over the engine. Have looked at the parts needed and bike is currently in pieces, just unable to find the starter clutch bearings and gear section needed. New from Yamaha I have been quoted £571 which tbh I find insane. Was hoping maybe to find these parts from a breaker or seized engine. Is it possible that anyone could give me some links of where to find these parts for a down to earth price or have any info on second hand bits? Am currently at a loss at what to do, is either find the bits needed or find a new bike which I cant afford. All suggestions welcome! Thank you in advance all ideas welcome.

It may be possible to repair the bearing if it's just the spring around the outside that's broken or stretched.

Hi,

Found the parts on ebay Germany as you recommended, thanks for that Have contacted seller not sure they will post to UK though at the moment but have my fingers crossed.

With regard to which bit is actually worn its hard to tell as it is slipping, but have been told its best to replace all pieces at the same time including the plate the bearings run on that bolts on to the back of the mag fly wheel.

I haven't had this bike very long as was bought to enable me to commute to work when we moved further afield. I'm hoping that there isn't any other major problem with it once I get it up and running as bike was very low on oil and has obviously had a fair amount of neglect. Having said that my first bike was a DT125LC that I built from bits, as well as having a DT125R for years and I have to say Yamaha engines do appear to be fairly hardy.

Thank you for all the help!

not being funny but are you aware of the "special" technique to check the oil on these?
ifnot then its so easy to overfill these engines, possibly causing the issues you have
