XTZ660 setup

I've just bought a XTZ to ride from Sydney to Broome and back. One bike I tested had engine bars and a centrestand. I am trying to find out who makes them or where I can get them. Does anyone know?

Also, does anyone know if Acerbis or someone else do a bigger tank for the XTZ?

I've owned an XTZ660 for a year now in the UK and am slowly setting it up for a trip - so far I can tell you that:

Fuel Tank- so far no one makes a standard to fit though people reckon you can get other bikes ones to fit - remember you have a 20 litre tank on and most of the non-BMW tanks are 23 litres at most.

Centre Stand is available and loads of crash bars though these seem quite expensive. I have just had a pannier rack made (£80 UK) to take my Touratech panniers, I think I will use the same bloke (engineering company) to make a stand and/or crash bars as and when I need them.

Thanks Tony,

I've ordered a "Nomad" fuel tank, which sits on the rear rack (7.5Litres), and you plumb it straight into the fuel line after the fuel tap (it has it's own tap). I may still need to cary extra fuel - so I'll have to strap on a 5 or 10 litre can.

I found the German firm Kedo (www.kedo.com) had some engine bars and centrestands at fairly reasonable prices. Might have to go with them, it's difficult to source stuff in Australia for the XTZ.

What tyres are you using or planning to use on your trip?

Hi there,
I'm in Sydney to at the moment earning some cash because I bought a Yamaha XTZ too. Planning to drive accros the deserts and many tracks like birdsville, old Gahn etc.
I have chosen Michelin 'Desert'tyres. I (think) will be driving most of the time alone so can't risk a broken tyre. The Michelin will give me the best change to keep me going. Also I think they will do a good job in the deserts. Although I've been radio for several months though SE-Asia I don'ty know what the desert will be and what the right choise is. So I guess you just have to choose one from advice and just try it. Are you taking panniers or your own backpack? If you'd like to meet for a and share some info/plans: click the address link above

Hi Roland,

I'm going to use the Trailwings until I get to Kalgoorlie, then transfer to either esserts of Pirielli MT21. I've heard (don't know how true) that Desserts are very hard to get on and off with levers, otherwise I wouldn't consider anything else. I've also heard to run heavy duty tubes, with an old tube slit and placed around the HD tube for extra protection (double tubing) + the puncture slime stuff. I've only owned road bikes with tubeless tyres, so I haven't even practiced a tyre change yet to get a good technique (I will this weekend). I'll follow the intructions in the Chris's book.

As far as luggage goes, I'm using Dri Rider "BikeMan" panniers, a Ventura rack and bag for the back, a Dainese backpack (with back protector) to store my camelbak bladder and tubes etc, and small DriRider tank bag for wallet, keys etc sunnies. I'm considering using some type of tank pannier system to carry the extra fuel (2 x 5 litre gerrycans), + I've hooked up a Nomad Aux 7.5 litre fuel tank that sits on nthe back of the rack (37.5 litres all up) apart from crossing the Simpson or Canning Stock Route, that should get me by (I hope). I'm now waiting on the Hepco & Becker Engine bars to arrive from Germany, and I'm set.

Bikebiz in Sydney used to sell centrestands and engine bars for the XTZ 660. Worth checking.
