Unhappy XTZ660 Electrical Parts ? Misfire.

Hi all. I'm in the same situation as Chimpy12 who posted a misfire question about 3 weeks ago.

Like him my bike will start, idle and run well for about 30 minutes then if you shut off the throttle it will give a quick misfire and try to cut out. If you do let it stall it won't start again unless you leave the bike to cool for 5 minutes, then it starts on the button.

I know it sounds like a coil problem but I've put a brand new one on and it didn't help.

Resistance ways everything meters out ok to the book specifications. I've redone all the wiring in the ignition circuit with new wire and connector plugs. Also simplified it somewhat by leaving out the sidestand switches etc.

So I'm begining to think it might be the plug cap or the pick up coil by the rotor. It could be the CDI unit but I thought it would be more likely just to either work or not rather than behave in this manner.

I'd like to ask if anyone has experienced certain trouble with these components and if they produced similar sort of symptoms before I go and spend a whole lot of money on the wrong bits.

Someone is pointing me towards the stator coil and other people have mentioned the rectifier/regulator but I think these parts have nothing to do with the ignition, the're only part of the charging system.

All help appreciated
Ralph

I would definately get the rectifier tested, or borrow a good one to see if it solve the problem.

Thumbs up Update

Just a post to provide an update.

I bought a couple of second hand parts on ebay. A stator and pick up for £40 and a coil, lead and plug cap for £10.

Since I had already tried the ignition coil I changed the stator and pick up first. I was thinking that maybe the wires from the pick up had gone brittle and hard after years of hot oil spalshing on them.
After swapping them over I fired the bike up and let it idle until it got really hot then it stalled - so it wasn't the pick up.

Lifted the tank off next and put on the other coil, lead and cap that I got.

It seemed to go ok so I took the bike out for a long run. When up to work and back, through a town centre and into the country without any problems.

So.... I think at the end of it all since I already had tried a new ignition coil and HT lead it must have been the PLUG CAP that was the culprit all along.

Will keep you all informed if anything else develops.

Ralph

Do you rate the Anakees or Metzelers? Road use and maybe a bit of graded use but only in europe (France,Spain) also the engine bars you had way back (motad) have you still got em? Happy to pay the post if they and the down pipes are about?
