1986 XT600 Fuel Line and Carb Setup Questions

New to this community. Happy to be here and can't wait to ride this bike. Just picked up a 1986 XT600 in pretty good condition. It started up and ran, but backfired like crazy. I adjusted the valves, changed oil/filter*and cleaned the carbs. Unfortunately, I am not sure how to connect the abundance of hoses these carbs have on them. There is a petcock which runs to the fuel in on the carb... This is the bent (90 degree) silver nipple? Then there*

I've managed to keep an inline 4 XJ550 Seca running like a top over the years, and figured this little dual carb setup would be a cinch, but it seems a little confusing to me.*

That huge black thing (ahem) there is part of the California emission system. A "charcoal canister". See:

Fuel in line is correct

The port that is missing a hose is the carb overflow/vent that doesn't really go anywhere.

Ps. Do you have the "manual" fuel pump jobby? If not - you might want to put the fuel pet cock to RES and even then add more than a couple of liters of fuel. Without that it won't be able to get the last few liters from the tank.

So, I it turned out my float needed to be adjusted (the needled wasn't opening enough to let fuel into the bowl.) Now, I double checked my valves were set at TDC and they are definitely within spec.

Unfortunately, the bike will only start with starting fluid (bad to use, I know) and when it starts it backfires like crazy and will only stay running with throttle.

The previous owner had tried to repair the exhaust with muffler tape (think he laid it down at some point). That (exhaust leak) may be one of the reasons for the backfire, but also thinking it could be a bad CDI.

What do you think? My mom died last week and the services cost a lot of money, so I need to be careful about throwing money at parts. Any suggestions on a good affordable replacement exhaust or CDI?

It's just a filler word. I meant the manual fuel pump "thing".
