Xt600 34l Vin

Can anyone tell me where to locate the Vehicle Identification Number on this bike? All I can find stamped on the frame (at the neck next to the info plate) and the engine is 34L followed by the 6 digit serial number. Did these bikes even have VINs back then? Thanks.

Whatever is stamped on the right hand side (as you sit on the bike) of the headstock is the VIN number
It should look something like this 34L-006176

Hmmm, yep, that's all I got but I always thought VINs were longer than that - a whole load of websites says 17 digits (the last 6 being the serial) Vehicle Identification Number - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Is 1983 just too early for the 17 digit VIN? Could I work out a 17 digit VIN from the info I have on the bike? Does it really matter? (like, crossing borders...)

My VIN is 1vj followed by 6 digits, that corresponds to the v5 so thats all that matters. (Like crossing Border's....)
