Starter motor noise
Hi
My 3AJ electric starter (or some part associated with the starting mechanism) makes a loud knocking as the engine fires and when the engine is cut. I have inspected the teeth on the motor spindle and the top cogs that it is directly driving and they seem fine. Every now and then the starter will fail with a clunking noise before re-engaging. Any ideas whether the starter is knackered or if its a deeper problem? Thanks, Mike |

Hi,
When you engage the starter-engine and when you cut the motor-engine, the mechanisme makes quite a knocking, metallic noise. That's normal and is caused by the way the mechanism that (dis)connects the starterengine with the engine works. If thats is what you are talking about then I think there is no problem. I'm running in my overhauled 3AJ and, when the engine is real hot, notice one loud metallic 'clang'-noise at the moment the engine takes over de starterengine. This is one single 'clang', louder then the ussual starting noise. I'm not sure yet what causes this, but may be anybody has suggestions/experiences with this? Peter |

I have the same "problem" after rebuilding my 3DS. I spoke to a Yamaha dealer that told me it was normal both when starting and stopping the motor. The noise from mine is a short loud "clank".
Nothing to worry about so I’m told…. |
