rpm drops

Hi again mates:

I was riding my xt and i saw the rpm in the dashboard like i always do,and i realized that the RPM engine in the dashboard were a little bit low in the dashboard,something like 150 rpm more or less,and i could feel the ENGINE was a little bit higher about rpm judging it with my hearing and the velocimeter.

What can be wrong with that?

I saw the tachometer cable that goes to the engine and i know this acts mechanically,for counting the rpms.

Is there some maintenance to this cable like lubing?

if so, because of lack of lubing, could this affect the rpms?

Hola xt performer!
hmm the tach cable should be lubed every other year ( or atleast thats what i do together with the rest of the cabling ) i use a lithium based grease spray with one of them gizmos you clamp on the cable sheathing.. a cable lubricator i think its called. NO the rpms should not change even if the cable has run dry, it should continue to show the correct rpm's until the cable breaks... i know its a dumb question, but have you recently changed to a different sprocket size ? its the only thing i can think of that will affect the readout

Sprocket has nothing to do with the rpm-counter which is driven by the camshaft.
Maybe the magnet in the instrument is dying.
Heve you left your bike next to huge loudspeakers?

Hola amigos,thanks for that info

My xt has the original measures when it comes to transmission,it's all standard.
I saw the tacho cable is located in one side of the camshaft axle,and there's a bolt either.I tried to remove that bolt but i couldn't,it was stuck,maybe some idiot mechanic screwed it too tight or with the rust and heat it's kind of welded.

If i remove this bolt, can i pull out the tacho cable from there?

i tried to remove that bolt but i couldn't.

My xt has never been close to huge loudspeakers,but i can say my xt is not too oldie,it's 98 model with just 40000 kms, and this problem started recently(yesterday).

is it bad luck or is it something normal this problem?

au contraire mon frere Fred.. changing for example to a sprocket with fewer teeth on the rear wheel WILL lower your rpm's at any given speed compared to riding with an original sprocket but thats besides the point.. obviously xt performer hasnt done any changes to his gear ratio.. im stumped

Laromonster : his complaint was not that the engine was doing more rpm at the same speed, but that he suspected that the counter was too pessimistic compared to the rpm of the engine!
XTperformer : it is normal that this screw is stuck. Drill it out. Always make sure you have one of these extra as a spare. And yes, if you remove it you can remove the cable. Also look into the ass of the instrument, there is a bearing that might need lubrication.

HI AGAIN:

I remove the cable from the tacho and i lube it,then i put it on,but know i can see the tacho's needle and it moves very slowly,the engine goes fast and the needle can't go to fast and when i release the throttle,the needle very slowly goes down and it locates at idle,that's the weird thing it does,what do you think it could be probably wrong with it?

please any comments would be appreciated

Sounds like the cable is spinning round but not locating properly in the back of the tacho. Posssibly worn ???
Make sure inner cable is driving tacho mechanism - try a power drill attached to engine end of inner cable and see what happens.

Hi again mates

I could remove the tacho cable attached from the engine,and i lubed the whole cable,i inpected the cable and i couldn't see the any signs of wear from the cable.

Then,i putted back together and the problem is still there.

What can i do?

any comments?

Have you tried lubricating the bearing in the ass of the instrument itself?

HI

Yes,as a matter of fact i remove the entire tacho from the dashboard and i putted light grease in it, but nothing happened

I don't know what's going wrong here

Can the tacho be opened and then tested by a specialist in this sort of machines(tacho,velocimeter)?
