Rear disc brake

Hi all

I have a number of questions about the rear disc brake on a 1991 XT600E, prompted by the liklyhood that the disc is so worn that it is likly to fail its next MOT, and I am considering fitting a different system.

A friend with a 3AJ Tenere had the bracket that connects the brake caliper to the swing arm snap, and when he went to the breakers (in Auz) he was told that this was a common problem and was peruaded to fit caliper, bracker and disc from a different bike. Is this true , or the breakers way of selling him something because he didn't have the original part in stock.

Whilst my girlfriend and I were travelling in Asia on her XT600E and my 3AJ Tenere we both had a couple of occasions when the back brake pedal went all the way down and even pumping it didn't get the rear brake working.
This was when the weather was hot but the back brakes hadn't been used a lot.Is this a known problem ? Strange that it happened to both bikes at the same time.

Has anyone changed to a different rear brake system or have any recomendations.

If I stick with the current set-up, does anyone know where I can get a less expensive disc than a Yamaha one?

Thanks

Mark

Talon offer a stainless steel disc which is considerably cheaper than the Yamaha one.
