Oil, coolers and guages !
My question relate to a 2002 XT600e which has the 23 litre Acerbis tank fitted.
First off, has anybody mounted an oil cooler to the bike when the Acerbis tank has been fitted - an idea of where one might go would be nice and I can't see an obvious mounting point. Secondly, should I bother fitting one anyway, for a trip to North Africa in Autumn/Spring when it will still be quite hot down south. I think it's just another thing to break/go wrong/more expense and so on and I'm inclined not to bother. Thirdly, (sorry for all the questions) if I don't bother, what sort of oil temperatures should I get excited about, assuming that I am running fully synthetic oil Cheers for the help Dick |

I believe that David Lambert says that an oil cooler isn't necessary on these bikes.

When I bought the bike, there was an (unfitted) oil cooler that came with it and I don't think it would be too expensive to plumb in somewhere |

Nope.. its not necessary...
I put an oil temperature guage on mine and going through Brazil in peak summer, my oil got upto 120/130 degrees. I used semi syth and it looked fine when I changed it. I would use fully synth if you can get it and change it at least every 3000-4000 miles.

No idea about the XT
![]() but my beemer when ridden slowly in hot climes and loaded does get rather hot despite its water cooling. So I've plumbed in a switchable oil cooler- It can run 'standard' or re-routed via cooler Maybe an overkill but designed with redundancy in mind- if it gets damaged/trashed , I can by pass it in 1 turns of a 2 taps
