Hey guys, I just recently bought my first motorcycle, a 1986 XT 600. I bought it cheap, as a project bike, and now realize it needs more parts than I had originally thought . I have come close to buying another one as a donor bike, but those all fell through. I am getting ready to check out the area salvage yards and was wondering which other models would be acceptable to take from. I did a quick look for an existing thread, but didn't see one. If there is a link to one, that would be great, otherwise, are all the 600 engines from that era interchangeable? also looking for controls and signal lights...

Where are you located at ? I have a pile of parts even an extra bike if your close .

BTW '84 thru '89 are the model year kickers that are the same for parts . The '90-'95 changed quite a bit but some parts will work .

Hey JJ, I'm in Northern California. I wish we were closer, as I would love to grab a full bike! My main need is to get a kickstarter. I didn't realize when I bought it that the shaft that the kickstarter attaches to is sheared off. If you look at the starter parts diagram, I need Parts #1 and #20, plus I'm sure that I will need to buy and install a new oil seal (#16). As for controls, I need to pretty much repopulate the entire handle bar, excepting the master cylinder, and including the gauges. I also need to get a muffler, and who knows what else. PM me if you are interested in selling that stuff.

Really, my question was about if all the 600s were the same, whether it was a dual sport, street bike, or whatever; and if the controls, like the throttle, levers and such were also interchangeable. I don't expect to find many enduros at the junk yard, but a mid-late 80s Yamaha street bike is a lot more likely.

ebay is your friend here, the pics make it easy to understand if things fit and you can always ask the seller. you just need to use the right wording to your search

some OEM parts sites will also tell you what other bikes use a the same part.

Depending on how important it is to you you might like to look at Zedder.com Zedder Enterprises

They've cross linked all the part numbers for just about everything the big four Jap companies have produced (nothing for my B120 though :thumb down: ) so you can find out what other models your brake lever or camshaft or whatever was used on.

The downside is they want money ($25) for the software to access the database.

No connection etc disclaimer - just read about them in a mag

I have the complete kick starter kit off 2 bikes , I even have new seals that you'll need . I have several MC and a couple new levers , clutch perches. It can all be done in one source for everything needed , I have too much of this stuff laying around here . I'll pm you with what it be , a lot cheaper than ebay .

Thanks guys, I appreciate all the replies. I unfortunately ran into a disappointing development. While looking up some other stuff I did a VIN decode and it came back as a TT350. With some help from JJRider, I finally found the displacement on the cylinder wall and confirmed that I did indeed not buy the bike I was told that I was being sold. On the upside, I did get it CHEAP and now have to make a decision about whether to build this one or part it out and get something more like what I thought I was. Oh well, lesson learned...
