hiya i came across this forum yesterday whilst looking for some information. reading through the posts i found some answers to questions i have had for a while cheers everyone. One thing im still a little stuck on is what my engine is i cant trace the engine number identification (first 3 digits). I bought a bike for spares for a project it is a real bitser the engine is an electric start 600cc the engine number (untampered) starts with 3MD- does anyone know what it is cheers j

i don't know either.
but since 1988 (tenere) / 1990 xt600 all e-start engines are the same.
they have a cylinder head marked '2KF' and a cylinder marked '3AJ..'.
There is a major difference concerning the crankcase: starting from 1996 the clutch lever is locatet on the right hand engine cover.

cheers for the reply i am just starting strip down for a complete re-build it wasn't running when i got it and the more i looked the more i found. The guy i got it from said he had rebuilt the engine (thrown it together to look complete more like) some of the things i found were most bolts lose clutch jammed (miss-aligned splines) electric starter spinning quick not turning engine (no bolts in flywheel) barrel stud missing. I can see from the excessive use of gasket paste he has had the cases apart so i thought i had better strip it down and start again. The list of parts required is getting quite big but will be fun when its done.

for different markets the frame/engine numbers can be different. e.g. the 1VJ is here in Switzerland a 1VK and the 3AJ is a 3DS.

as the Tenere and also the XT600 was also made in Brazil - most of time the engine parts came from Japan - your bike could be from Brazil. Or just for a small country with special requirements. But this does not mean that there is anything different inside your engine, most of time Yamaha changed just the jets in the carbs and the lights.

I dont know any other way to find out, than to post in the all the xt forums around the world, maybe somebody knows.
