Can anyone reccomend an in-line fuel filter for use with an '89 U.S. model xt600? The one I have tried (sorry, can't remember the brand)makes the bike starve for fuel from about 3/4ths throttle and beyond. Any suggestions greatly appreciated.

I've got the anodized alloy type screw-together filters on all my bikes.They're made by Velo(or Velosport),and usually cost around £4-£5.The little filter in the original petrol tap usually catches most of the hairy stuff so check here for the fuel starvation first.I've never had the inline filter block up yet.Tempted fate now...i bet it splutters to a halt next time i ride!

I recently fitted a second hand Acerbis tank to my XT600E. It didn't come with fuel lines etc. so I went to my local motor factors and bought some standard petrol pipe and a couple of in-line petrol filters (for the twin petrol taps) which I presume are standard filters designed for cars as they are a little bulky (but not too bad)and I dont think my local motor factors do bike parts! Being designed for the greater fuel consumption of cars they might be a good option as I presume it is restricted flow thats causing your problems. Anyway I went for a good blast on the bike today and they seem to work well. They were £1.20 a pop. Not sure of the brand.

1)fuel filters are directional-check for the little arrow.
2)the fuel line may be kinked at the filter attachments.
3)the air vent for the gas tank may be clogged,causing the added filter to form a partial vacuum.
4)maybe the filter is designed for high pressure fuel injectors?

Thanks for the suggestions, guys. The filter was fitted properly, with the fuel lines not kinked and the tank vent working properly. I think maybe the filter was designed for a higher pressure system (as BMBaxter suggested) I will try one of the other brands reccomended and see how that works.
