Arrow Vietnam - Ha Tien border is open!

It sounds too good to be true, but a couple of guys just rode their bikes into Vietnam:

We took big bikes into Vietnam - Legally! • RideAsia.net

15-day visa at the border. I don't know whether it is possible to ride out of the area.

"Thai licensed Suzuki 250 Djebel and a Cambodia licensed Suzuki DR 650"
Big bikes (for Vietnam at least), but I wonder what would happen if one tried with a bike not licensed in SE Asia.
Anyone up to confirm if this can be repeated with a bike from outside the region?

Hi,

thats quite an interesting issue. I didnot find any official statments about "foreign vehicles in Vietnam".

I only remember that I saw 3 Australia-licensed enduro bikes last year in Lam Dong Province. Unfortunately I didnot have opportunity to find the drivers of the bikes. I will try to gather more info .....

Paul,

Whatever you do, don't mention this border crossing to officials. We don't want to wake sleeping dogs!

If you read topics on HUBB you will find that it has not been possible to take any foreign vehicle into Vietnam for a few years without a permit. Usually, this involves a guided tour (like in China), but some people have succeeded in obtaining a permit by themselves.

I hope this is a sign of a little sphincter loosening by the Viets. I noticed that the government was spending $hitloads on resorts and infrastructure on the resort islands, maybe mention this is your destination at the border as ferries can be caught at Ha Tien or Rach Gia not far from the gate

I doubt it. This border crossing leads into a "Special Economic Zone". But, who knows...
