we have a very nice page with peoples experiences shipping the bike, but why not a page with peoples experiences buying and selling their bikes on different continents.

I just spendt a few days and a fair bit of cash driving to Uruguay, only to find out that it is not legal to sell bikes there. I couldent find that info anywhere so sucks for me.

I think that my experience should be in a database so that others may benefit from it, rather than it being hidden somewhere on the boards.

Sorry. I just saw your other post and it seems you are trying to sell a foreign registered bike to a dealership. The point in question is whether the bike can be registered locally, so it's a matter of whether the importation of a second-hand vehicle for resale is allowed. Yes?

I imagine that this, as opposed to selling to another traveller is going to be a problem in most places and more so because of tax implications than anything else. Especially as the vehicle would have been imported on a temporary permit.

The idea was not only in relation to my own bike, I think it is of interest to many people.

You can sell bikes in Argentina and Paraguay, but someone has to pay an import tax. In uruguay there is a rule against importing used bikes, so the dealers dont even give you a lowball offer - they just say no.

This is important knowledge I think.

I would also like information about peoples experiences buying bikes in China, Russia, Brazil or whereever. I is really nice to be able to read what bike another person bought, how they registered it, how they got rid of it.

Bikes that are being sold traveller to traveller are not really a part of this idea.

Ok, now I understand and a great idea - a bit like the "shipping" information.

For my dos centavos worth; the permanent importation of used vehicles or parts thereof is forbidden in Colombia.

Good idea - now on the list!

It will be much the same as the shipping system. NOTE - the shipping system needs to be completely rebuilt (it's 5-6 years old) - then we can "clone" it and tweak to set up new systems like this. However, needless to say that will take a little while

While you are at it Grant:

Why not make a similar system for accomodation and repair shops? The current system with 20 different forums is not optimal.

Guess you could use the same applet for bikes, repair and accomodation since the basic information is:

Country, City, Address
Rating of quality 1-5
Date of relevance
Name of place
Description

Also I think it would be a good idea to do something about the left bar. Too much infrmation in small letters. It is not usefull enough and quite confusing for a newbie.

Maybe also clear some of the clutter on the front page. Again, much much too much info on a front page. Make it a bit slimmer and nicer. Perhaps some drop down menues would be good.

I agree absolutely! In the plans going forward - once we solve the shipping system, there's loads more we can do. Sadly it all takes time.

I'd love too - please (ANYONE) post a suggested list of what SHOULD be on the left menu (and remember the number of times someone says "what's a ??" etc and everyone points to the left menu.)

Drop down's no, but yes, it desperately needs a restyle. Unfortunately I never said I was a web designer or graphics guy, and I'm the one stuck doing it - and quite frankly, I have little idea what to do with it.

I'm thinking put the bits of info into bits, perhaps a bit like the lower part of this page: World business, finance, and political news from the Financial Times - FT.com UK (under "world") - but it's HARD!

Right now we're focusing on lots of other things, mainly the infrastructure of the site - lots more pages converted to the new system going live over the next week.

Main thing to note with the home page - we're restricted to the current layout because of everything else on the site, the CMS, vBulletin etc - so all we can really change is the main block of content. Anyone wants to take a stab at it I'd love to see it!
