Shipping into the UK

Hi,

I've been told that if you ship into a port in the UK they do not allow you to ride away with the bike, you have to get it delivered to an address somewhere in the UK.

Does anyone know if the same rules apply if you fly the bike in.

Everywhere else i've shipped into has always let me ride the bike away, we do like to be different don't we.

Cheers
Russ

I've brought my UK-registered bike back to the UK by air. Once you've cleared it through customs (as 'personal effects') and collected it from the airline's cargo warehouse you can ride it away.
Or carry it away in a van as I did.
That was Gatwick, and BA.

But there's no customs presence at Gatwick for cargo, it's all done by computer on the Customs' network. So BA directed me to an expediter across the corridor who logged my bike onto the customs network and got it cleared. That cost me a bit of money.

I've been told that had it been at Heathrow the airline would have directed me to the customs office for clearance and it shouldn't cost a thing.

Bear in mind if you ride it away it'll need tax and insurance, those airports are surrounded by ANPR cameras.

Cheers
Ken

Riding it away will be a problem as i need an MOT to get tax and insurance, catch 22 situation. Looks like i'll have to transport it with a truck.

I'm guessing if had a valid MOT it would be the cheapest way to. Other messages have suggested the customs fees and transporting a bike away from a shipping port will cost around 600 quid.

Thanks for your help

Unless there has been some big changes while I have been out of the country you can still ride the bike away from both sea ports and air ports. You can get insurance on line, print it off and take it with you and as for tax and MoT, booking a MoT at your local garage will let you ride the untaxed, unMoTed bike away. My last experience with this was last June at Liverpool docks picking it up from a Ro-Ro from Durban and if my memory is correct cost 110 pounds. Ride safe.

Thanks for the info.

I've heard a few people say you can't ride away from folkstone.

I'll do some more investigation but if anyone else out there has any more information i would be extremely grateful.

Thanks
Russ
