Traveling through Americas with new car

I would like to do the trip from Bolivia to Canada with a Beetle bought in Bolivia. I have my canadian driving licence.

So I've checked up the section about paperwork and it seems I don't need a carnet de passage.

- Do I need an international driving permit? Is it absolutely necessary?

- What kind of paper will they ask me when passing the customs? How much?

- It seems it's a lot of trouble buying a car from a country and bringing it back in Canada. What kind of trouble is it, how much and how can I get around it?

Thanks for any help
