Selling a UK 'reg' Motorbike in Europe or Ukraine?

Hi,
As part of a round the world trip, I am going to be travelling through Europe first. I was hoping to be able to buy a motorbike in either the UK or France, and then sell it on again somewhere else when I am done.

The ideal place would be Ukraine, as that is where I need to catch my train to Moscow from. If not perhaps Warsaw or even Germany.

I was hoping to just be able to roll up to a motorbike dealership somewhere, and just get a bit of money for the bike and not have to worry about being stuck with it.

Has anyone done anything similar, or have any idea if it is at all possible?

I have tried doing a search and haven't really turned anything up, so apologies if this has been covered.

Thanks in advance.

Don't buy in the UK

I don't know anything about selling in any of those countries but I wouldn't buy in the UK because of course your bike will be in miles per hour and the headlight will dip the wrong way. Also you'd have to pay road fund licence for it, and it seems like a bit of a nightmare to insure.

You could buy in France, but to register you'd need an address of some sort, however I do know dealers who've let people register to the dealer address. There's no road tax to pay, but sadly I don't knwo about insurance if you don't have a residential address.

Sorry, that's all a bit gloomy, I'm sure someone will come along and say it's all possible because they've done it.

For a dealer the hassle of paying import duty, registering it etc make buying a foreign registered bike not worth it.If it is a particularly rare model or one that can be broken for spares someone may be interested but you'll get next to nothing for it.
a private individual may be prepared to take the risk if they dont know whats involved.
'course the answer is to take a right pile of s***e and just dump it in a ditch when you're through with it!

Membership - help keep us going!

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.

You don't have to be a Member to come to an HU meeting, access the website, or ask questions on the HUBB. What you get for your membership contribution is our sincere gratitude, good karma and knowing that you're helping to keep the motorcycle travel dream alive. Contributing Members and Gold Members do get additional features on the HUBB. Here's a list of all the Member benefits on the HUBB.
