Leaving a bike in South America
Can any one tell me info about leaving a bike in a South American country for a length of time.
I am a Canadian and am wanting to ship my bike to Bogota and from there a couple possibilities exist. 1- spend 3-4 weeks in Colombia, leave the bike in storage and come back in 6 months or a year and then travel further south eventually getting to Ushuaia and from there who knows. 2- start a slow drive south and leave my bike in storage in another country on the way south and come back again late next fall and get to Ushuaia for Xmas and then continue from there . Getting away for 3 to 5 weeks is what I have available without killing my business up here and I would ideally like to ride to the southern tip and then ship from there (Santiago or BA). I don’t want to rush this trip. I have contacted the Colombian Consulate here in Canada and am not getting response in a timely manner that will allow me to plan this. I would like to leave towards the end of Feb. Will any country allow my bike to stay for up to a year? I understand that Colombia will allow 6 months but I am not sure about extension possibilities. Then, would I have to be there to extend I could this be accomplished from Canada? Thanks, Craig |

argentina
hi craig. i've just done a trip through chile and argentina. i left my bike in argentina and it can stay there for 8 months. like you i'd like to see more of the continent so have been looking into the regs. looks like peru is 3 months and equador is 6 months. chile is also 3 months (you can get extensions though). that's what i know so far.

Ecuador import
... and equador is 6 months...
[/quote] Ecuador allows you to have your bike on temporary import for a period of 90 days only but you can go out of the country and have another 90 days the same day. Marco
