gaining a drivers licence abroad
Hi,

I am thinking of buying a Royal Enfield in India and riding it around for a month and if it goes well and is possible also ride it home to the UK. But I think that idea might be getting ahead of myself.

The only HUGE problem is I dont have a driving licence and of course no international drving license ! Do you know if its possible to do a driving test in India and get licence there then obtain a international driving licence ? I am currently in China and weont be going back to the UK before I go to India.

I held a provisional licence when I was much younger and rode a yammaha DT50 trail bike for a year and also used to ride 125cc trails off road. So I have the road sense and experience riding bikes.

One possibility would be to go to the police and report a wallet with drivers licence and a couple of other arbitry items stolen. They'll give you a report that should do the job of keeping police that check your licence happy. (a couple of rupees probably would do so as well...)

So you have road sense in India?

Even experienced, every day riders haved problems in other countries.

Riders here returning to riding after some years being off bikes have a poor accident record.

Get a full licence in your own country first before going to one of the more dangerous places to ride would be my advice. And once you have your full licence go on a few rider train courses .. increase your skill level. You do want to come back alive?

This would definitely work in INDIA!
But Indeed there is a tremendous amount of Risk involved! Having Ridden in UK cannot be directly counted as roadsense experience on Indian Roads. Its a different ball game al together here in India.
And Enfields are a different bike from any other. Read a lot about them and learn basic fixes before you decide to ride them off to some place far away.

Thanks for your advice. I might just do that. I have heard its easy to bribe from someone who had no experience I met on my travels here also with no license. 10 bux to the police each time.

Im not kidding myslef its going to be easy to ride there amd will take at least a week to get aqainted (both with the bike and traffic rules - if such rules exist which im sure they dont) if I do persue this dream.

In a ideal world I would go back to England and get a full licence. But I dont have enough funds and this is a once in a lifetime trip and I have no intentions on going back to India (there is the rest of the world to explore). That said I wont be taking any risks at all or ride if I feel im out of my depth.
