First I would like to thank Beddhist for his post about the website listing visa requirements for most of the World!! I was wondering if anyone knows of similar sites listing coutries the require a carnet, specifically for British licence holders??

The only site I'm aware of is the AIT (link on the left under Carnet), but it's only theoretically correct: it lists all countries that ACCEPT the CDP, not those REQUIRING it.

About as useful as a chocolate teapot.

Some travellers tell that from Turkey to Iran some border posts have alternative available for Carnet for Iran, costs around 100-200-300$ (depends how good "talker" you are on your bike's worth) and takes a lot of paperwork hassle, but doable if you don't have much to deposit hugely on Carnet before the trip.

What i'd be interested is also the Carnet requirement or possible ways of skiping it for UAE, Oman and Yemen?

Thanks for the info Douglas. But the real question is not where you CAN use your carnet, if you have one, but where it is REQUIRED.

Do you have any info on that?

From what I've gathered uptil now, a carnet should NOT be required for:

Tunesia
Libya
Niger

Does anyone know about: Chad, Cameroon and Gabon?

A search on their site for 'carnet' turns up a lot of info, even in English and French! That's interesting, cause according to the info on the carnet page on the left they only issue carnets for German residents.

They assured me that they WILL issue us carnets for our FRENCH registered bikes, but I have a German residence registered.

The French auto club, on the other hand, told me that AIT rules prohibit the issuing of carnets for vehicles not registered in the country of the issuing club. The exception is said to be for vehicles from countries where there is no issuing club.

I notice you've all said Europe doesn't require a Carnet. Does this go for eastern as well as western europe? I'm particularly interested in Herzegovina, Croatia, Romania and Bulgaria.

Does anyone know the position regarding NZ? It seems that officially a Carnet is required but is it really necessary? We are on the verge of going and with Paul Gowan going AWOL (presumably with stress, the amount of people he helps!) it is going to be nigh on impossible to get ours in place in time. Can you get away without one?

The use of the carnet is optional in NZ. Use it if you have it and you are going to continue travelling to another country requiring it. Otherwise don't bother.

You have to deposit 16% of the current value of your bike, if you don't use a carnet. Check the Carnet link on the left, there should be a link to the relevant NZ Govt. web pages.
