Insurance

I am planning to buy an Enfield Bullet and ride it back from India mid 2002. The UK's AA have said no worries to giving me a carnet for an Indian registered bike but said they can't help with bike insurance for Europe. People I have spoken to who have doen the trip mention that they didn't even get any bike insurance. Is this the norm? or is there a company that deals in this area?

I don't really care about about bike insurance to be honest (will of course have my own medical insurance), but wondered how countries feel about people riding through without insurance...

Cheers - Spud

Hai Spud,

You could try alessie@alessie.com
I think it's a dutch company, but they do bike-insurance all over the world, so maybe also for you in europe.

As to your question "how would country's feel when you drive un-insured"
In holland it is not permitted. If they find out, and they probably will, the bike will be confiscated at the spot. It's highly iligal.
I think this goes as well for other european country's
This concerns only the damage to other persons and/or materials, I think it's called a liabillety-insurence (in holland WA)

I hope this awnsers your question.

Maarten. Thanks for your reply. I shall check out the company you've given me. I was just thinking with my UK head on.. it's highly illegal here to have no insurance but you wouldn't think so considering how many people do it.

Hi Maarten!
Got a reply from Maria M. Alessie (alessie@alessie.com) with regards to insurance for my Indian Enfield Bullet. here it is for anyone else who may find it useful:
"We can offer third party liability insurance valid for all
European
countries for a minimum period of 2 months and a maximum period
of 12
months, provided you are 25 years of age or older. . At present
the premium
amounts to Euro 288, 15 for a period of 2 months, and Euro 88,49
for every
following month. However, we are aexpecting an increase in
premiums per
Oct.1, 2001 and of course we cannot predict what the premiums
for the year
2002 will be.
For drivers between 21-24 years of age there is a 25% surcharge
to the
premium.
It is impossible at this moment to say if the far Eastern
countries such as
India, Pakistan, Afghanistan and Iran can be included in the
coverage. This
will mainly depend on how the present political situation will
develope.
Perhaps you can contact us again towards the end of this year or
1-2 months
prior to your departure to India for a definite offer"
