Question British rider needs insurance cover in Andorra and Switzerland

Hello HUBBers,
I'm currently planning my first trip to mainland Europe. I've got insurance cover for those countries in the EU but this does not include Andorra and Switzerland.

Anyone had to deal with this issue before and what advice can you offer. All help would be much appreciated.

ADAC Insurance from Germany covered me last year for Andorra and Switzerland. About 100euro for a month.

If you have a British Insurance Policy it will automatically cover you for the legal minimum insurance in-
a)- all other member countries of the EU
b)- Iceland, Norway, Switzerland, Liechenstein and Croatia.
Look on the back of the Certificate of Insurance.

I am unsure how Andorra fits in with this but some policies also include Andorra and Monaco in b) above. A phone call to your insurer should clarify.

Presumably the same EU imposed condition applies to Insurances issued in other EU member countries. If you have Insurance issued elsewhere in the EU, ask them.

If you want a greater level of cover than the legal minimum you must sort this with you existing Insurer who will probably make a charge.

Thumbs up

I'm with Bennetts in the UK and I rang them up to ask if I was covered in Andorra and Switzerland. They asked if they were in the EU and I said no, because they're not, and was told I wouldn't be covered.

However, after checking my policy as suggested by Tony P, I've found out that the Territorial Limits section does indeed list Andorra and Switzerland. So i'm covered. Result!

All I need to find out now is if Andorra and Switzerland require a Green Card.

Thanks for the replies so far

For Police etc purposes, NO. Green Cards are generally no longer used in Europe
Your UK Certificate of Insurance will be acceptable proof of legal minimum insurance - look at foreigh language wording on bottom or reverse.
UK insurances include legal minimum cover in Europe automaticaly for a prescribed number of days in a year (usually 45 or 60). Most insurers don't even require being told in advance you are going.

If you wish to have the full insurance terms (comprehensive, theft etc) you need to arrange that with your insurer.

Vignette

Seeing as this is your first trip to mainland Europe - I wondered if you knew that you needed a vignette to ride on the motorways in Switzerland - the fines for using the m'ways without one are hefty...
