Strength in numbers crossing El Salvador and Honduras around Oct 20th
Hi fellow travelers!

Me and my wife are on our way south on 2 Klr650s through central America. We are currently having a break studying Spanish in Guatemala, and plan to move on the beginning of next week.
I just want to reach out and see if anyone is out there on the same schedule that would feel better in a group through El Salvador and Honduras. We plan on crossing into El Salvador early around Oct 20(it can be flexible) , stay one night near the eastern border and do in and out of Honduras in one day.

Oh yes and we are a nice, clean and sympathetic (at least from my perspective) couple from USA and Sweden in our upper thirties, living our dream and aiming for Argentina.

I hope you haven't rushed through yet. My wife and i spent some time crossing through all of Honduras recently on one bike, heading north and we loved it. One of the most friendly country we have travelled through! Even the pump action shotgun weilding guards everywhere were friendly. Just stay out of dodgy areas as you would anywhere and don't ride at night.

The big question is, which areas are dodgy and how does one make this determination? Travel books are out of date by the time they get published. Anything I learn online may be accurate at the time it is posted, but safety can change in a heartbeat. If I leave from the US on a similar trip in say March of 2017 and won't be in Honduras for 60 days, the information I originally acted on may be stale.

This conundrum is the biggest one I face. Maybe we all just have to just be cautious and exercise judgment of each situation as it is presented to us. Kind of a self fulfilling prophecy I suppose.

Hi NC, don't worry about it, take one step at a time and find out what the locals (mostly very friendly) and travellers coming the other way think. Most of the problems seem to be drug/gang related and in cities out late at night. We steer clear of both. Nowhere on our trip have we felt unsafe and everywhere is better than the storeys you read about. That doesn't mean that crime doesn't happen. We never ride at night, ask about how safe it is walking around at night and generally steer clear of cities. You will have the time of your life!!

I should add that guide books do give fairly good advice on which areas are dodgy and also look on government foreign office advice. We use Footprint guides, much better than the others and they give fairly accurate info on hostel/hotel parking and road conditions.

Me and Zoki Kawazoki took the northern route through El Salvador croosing from Guatemala on CA 12 and heading for Matapan. Great riding, freindly border personel and cool weather made it quite nejoyable. Had an accident near Ciudad Barrios and met the nicest people who helped me out there. Great memories of El Salvador. Honduras, I just blasted through as he border crossing made me just want to be out of the seemingly unfriendly place. others have had great experiences there so listen to them. Also if you need any moto service, Will in Barrios will go above and beyond to help you.

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love.
