Eastern Europe tour July- August 2012

Hi all, I'm planning a trip East, approx 4-5 weeks starting at the end of July.
The dates are flexible ish, but I'm hoping to be out of the UK during the Olympics.
Locations wise I'm flexible but would like to get down to the Crimea/Turkey area and/or some of Russia &Belarus. (Visas needed for these two)
I generally stay in cheap hotels(preferred option!) but I'm open to a spot of camping if needed.

I like to ride for a day or so then do a bit of sightseeing, personally I think old industrial/military is more interesting than your average art gallery....

Anyone thinking about something similar that may want to get together for some all or just general shooting the shit about that part of the world?

ta for reading,

JC

Might be worth skipping Belarus and visit Ukraine instead. Then you would get a chance to visit Prypyat and that's about as military-industrial post-apocalytpic landscapes as you're likely to get in this part of the world.

Email me if you're thinking about travelling near Warsaw. Might be I'll have some free time

Have fun planning!

Cheery Keny, I could spend a long time around Prypiat given the chance...
Thanks for the advice, I did Ukraine last year, I really enjoyed it so I'll be going back sooner rather than later.
I've not yet done Belarus, I want to go as it is still the last dictatorship on mainland Europe apparently....
I'll be sure to give you a shout if Warsaw is on the cards, probably will be!!

Regards,

John

Hi JC - I can recommend Turkey. Went there last year via Eastern Europe out of London. Turkey was superb - people great. Some roads could be better but plenty of history and scenery all over. Get all the way over to the East of Turkey if you have the time. Enjoy your trip. I'm jealous.

I posted a write-up of a similar trip I did last September here: Notes from a September 2011 ride through Romania, Bulgaria, Turkey, and Greece, perhaps that info might be helpful to you.

I've had bad experiences in Ukraine (crooked cops, etc.) and personally, I wouldn't go back there - in my opinion, Romania and Bulgaria are far more interesting and far more hospitable. But, that's just my opinion, "your mileage may vary".

Hi Brett, ta for your advice! I'll be doing Turkey at some time in the near future, if not this year then next. I figure a run anti clockwise around the Black Sea would be a fun thing to do.

Hi Pan, I'm tempted to agree with you re Romania & Bulgaria but only to a certain extent. I think my mileage did vary with Ukraine so I'm not put of having another go. The Crimea is a big draw for me!

Regards,

John

Go east

Hi from South Spain. I am a native russian speaker and Plan to do the trip to Ukraine from South in June/Jule. So if you like to join me and have it easier in Ukraine/Crimea, lets talk about dates.

Was last year with car there - the roads seems to be a miles better that 2009. So keep in touch.

btw: my start point; Malaga - France - Germany - Poland - Ukraine - Crimea - Back.
