Expired carnet and bike still in field.

Dear All,
Has anybody tried to renew a very expired carnet from the ADAC while the bike is still on tour? I have a bike stored in West Africa and never got around to dealing with the carnet which has now expired. ADAC did contact me about it, but I succesfully stuck my head under the sand and they never contacted me about it again. They still hold my deposit.
I will write to them again about it, but would like an idea about what kind of reaction to expect.
Cheers,
CJ.
