Central and South America Land Borders

Has anyone actually crossed any of the land borders south of Mexico recently? I crossed into Mexico from the USA on a motorcycle in April, but now with the Delta Variant, I'm curious about all the land borders from Chile north to Mexico.
Planning on shipping my bike to Chile and riding back to the USA in December - March.

Well doesn't that s__k. Curious about where you get your land border crossing info? I'm finding conflicting info all over the place.

Borders

Well,
even if you get updated information that is valid today.
Nobody knows anything about the future.

It is about risks, nothing is for sure.

Thanks for mentioning this.
I just took a quick look and Mario has a ton of interesting short videos about his motorcycle travels.
I will be checking them out later tonight!

From Toby Shannon of Around the Block Moto Adventures in Huanuco, Peru. I was hoping to ride from Peru to Patagonia in January.

*Edit: I just contacted iPeru, their official source for tourist info. The borders remain closed, with no idea of when they will reopen.

I am not finding any info that states Peru borders are closed either, regardless of the website. I am seeing that Peru is still denying entry to people from specific countries, but that has been going on for a bit.

We appreciate the insight tohellnback.

Please share with the community as you become aware of updates, I am sure the members of this community would be very grateful.

Since I have learned that SA is really only open to flights, I began contacting embassies and other official tourist departments of the various countries. I will post any findings as well.

I understand that most tourism to different countries is based on air travel, but it is very frustrating that they do not differentiate between air and land when they announce "border openings", especially since, afterall, their borders are actually NOT open....

land borders

you are correct Flying is not a problem but getting the population vaccinated to say 75 percent is a slow go and until that is reached I dont think you will be crossing any borders this year
But it may change
tourism with Adventure riders is a very small percentage in the tourist economy
the governments department of tourism wants you to stay in there country
Risk Mitigation only makes sense
In my experience of getting to know the world I usually pick a Country and get to know it, In other words the price of playing poker is always high when you are on a learning curve. Visiting a foreign country when customs are the complete opposite to your culture. You will pay to play and if you return in the future the game is cheaper unless you have not observed

If you want to travel right now in SA, the best bet is to fly in to a country, rent a moto, and explore that country. Seeing your plans are Dec 2021 > March 2022, that's a LONG way in the future. My understanding is there is extensive public willingness to receive vaccines in many SA countries. Chile I believe has a fairly high level of vaccination already (80% +) with corresponding lower infection rate. I know of countries where international tourism is important do recognice the importance of controlling covid. It will be different, and likely better when you want to travel.

Land Border Crossings vs Flying

It's important to remember that there are often different rules for land borders and flying into the same country. This applies during the current Covid restrictions but also in more normal times.

There are many online resources that are great for planning, but it's a good idea to double check with the country's own customs/immigration site a few days before you plan to arrive at the border. Things change rapidly and frequently these days. Also, some countries are banning nationals from certain countries and not others, and these restrictions are updated constantly. Vaccine status, nationality, etc. will make everyone's situation unique.

International travel involving multiple land border crossings has always required the long-distance traveller to be flexible and adaptable to the ever changing situations (politics, conflicts, disease, etc). Covid is another factor and will probably be with us for some years.

Santé,
Robert

USA to Costa Rica border

I am planning to go in December and this is what I have been able to find out. I found the best source of information is the US embassy website for each individual country of interest. They had links to the relevant country website from there where I confirmed the information posted. Nicarauga is the country I am least confident about the accuracy of the information. Any confirmation by someone actually crossing these borders would be nice to hear.

So for a Canadian going to USA, Mexico, Guatemala, Elsalvador, Honduras, Guatemala, Nicarauga, and Costa Rica I found.... All countries on this list will let you in without a quarantine period if you are fully vaccinated except for Nicarauga where it seems you just need a negative pcr test before entry. Might also need a test to go from Mexico to USA by land border but it wasn't totally clear to me. Probably when US land borders open on Nov8 it will be cleared up.

Costa rica has a website that they require you to fill out a form on before entry https://salud.go.cr

Honduras also has an electronic form to fill out before entry https://prechequeo.inm.gob.hn
