Boots & Helmet - In the crate or hand luggage ?

I've just packed the bike up as its being put on a ship on Tuesday.

Well, there is no space for my helmet and big MX boots on the bike and I've already got a small hang luggage stuffed with documents and valuables.

Do you think they will be safe in the crate or should I try and make them into hand luggage somehow.

£300 boots and £300 helmet are things I can not afford to lose.

And no, im not wearing them on the plane

Boots n Helmet

Only put your boots & helmet in the crate if is locked up tight. I work at an airport and I see gear going missing from the aircraft hold everyday. NEVER, NEVER leave anything of value in your hold luggage ALLWAYS carry high value items with you.

Good idea, since some airlines aren't happy at all to allow your helmet into the cabin.

I did exactly the same and it worked very well.
I actually also wore my full motorcycle goretex gear on the plane (I had no alternative...) and I took with me on board the tank bag as carry-on baggage.

Everything except my jacket went in the crate with the bike. I only carried my 49L ortlieb bag with all my clothes and bike jacket on the plane. I was carrying lightweight walking boots on the trip so wore them on the plane, i just strapped the bike boots to the back seat of the bike, there's loads of room in the crate anyway. just put the helmet in its own bag and wrapped stuff around it to stpo it moving. Didn't take a tankbag as you just fill it with more stuff, just a mapcase (Barpack i think its called).
