Land Cruiser 80 Series

I did a two year overland trip in a LR130, which I sold to a friend. Purchased an 80 in Dec 2000 which is a superb vehicle - have been considering bringing it back to the UK but have no idea what the score is re: import duty etc. I have been told that if you have owned the vehicle for 6 months you don't pay duty - can anyone help as the vehicle is great and completely kitted out with all brand new kit in Decinc OME suspension, ARB diffs and comp, ARB bullbar, Front runner roof rack, Outback Extreme double rear wheel carrier (probably the best system I've ever seen) and loads of other kit.
Any hints, tips or info happily excepted.

Cheers
ChrisC

Hi,

I think that you will find that you will have to pay customs duty, and then VAT on top of that!

HM Customs have a web site which has some of the info you need - but to get an estimate of the duty you will have to pay, you have to phone them - they have a phone number on the web site, and the info they need from you when you do phone.

It may also be worth checking out the MoT road worthy test requirements, especially the emission requirements if your vehicle was sold into a third world market and/or has a petrol engine. There is also MoT info on the web - even the tester's manual is there!

I use www.google.com as a search engine that seems to turn up the goods.

Good Luck!

Andy

Hi Chris,

Also have a look at www.autotrader.co.uk, and click on "International" and then on "Buying or Selling Advice from HM Customs & Excise".

I've lived as an Expat for several years now and looked into this question in the past - I was going to bring a Patrol GR back to the UK in 1997, but that's another story...

If you have personally owned the vehicle for at least six months and it is your primary means of personal transportation (i.e. your main vehicle) and you have lived overseas for the same six month period, then you will be able to bring the vehicle back to the UK without any duty. VAT should not be applicable, as it is not a commercial vehicle, although if it is considered a commercial vehicle and you are VAT registered you can calim it back.

Good luck.
