Portugal
A polite request.
Jane and I are off to Portugal for the first time in a few weeks. Does anybody have any must see places, roads to ride, or light tracks and trails to be explored.

Or any bike friendly hostel / cheap hotel recommendations.

No plans, only the ferry booked and some maps bought. We are also taking some bivi gear for some of those clear sky nights.

I've never visited myself but a lot of people I know really rate Camping Toca Da Raposa for a really relaxing experience.

Depend what you want. North is more "pristine" (and colder, nights can be very cold) . South (Algarve) is more "turist" (warmer and more expensive) . You can't "go wrong" Portugal is nice country.

Looks like we are staying more north then, like pristine, less tourists, remote, and we can do cold / cooler.

Plenty of excellent trails in the north, good place to stay is the Cepo Verde campsite just north or north west of Braganca on the N103. If you don't want to camp, they have nice stone cabins of varying sizes to rent, all are en suite etc and the on site restaurant does good food. Speak to Susanne, she speaks good English.

Like francs says..you can't go wrong with Portugal!

Depending on your time, you've got just about a bit of everything!

One suggestion, if you have the time, is do the EN2 (estrada nacional nº2): the longest in the country (aprox 700kms) goes from Chaves in the far north to Faro in the far south.
Great scenery and you can take detours to visit other places...

An alternative, again time permiting, is to do the what I call the peripheral or perimeter tour...like going south all along the coast and coming back north all along the border with Spain. Again greats views and great tracks and trails to explore!

a must do is visit moto club de Faro, on the main rd into Faro on l/h side, big club house with stainless steel "exhaust pipe" up the side of the building, ask anyone in town. real laid back place great people and very welcoming. they have their rally this weekend, we'd be there except bike getting fixed, heading over that way next week, may run into you on the road!
Spain and Portugal are both great.
camp site in Albefuera is good, great steaks in the restaurant.

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.

You don't have to be a Member to come to an HU meeting, access the website, or ask questions on the HUBB.
