I'll not try and counter your opinion on the whole 'peak-oil' issue, as your comment about there not being the demand for oil to justify bringing new fields online about had my jaw hitting the table.

My particular comment about 'change at the top' wasn't referring to those at the top being secure regardless. The current situation in the various N. African countries merely serves to underline my point. The people at the top might have changed, but if you think that's going to affect the price you pay for fuel, then you've got a surprise coming.

At the end of the day, we want it, the OPEC nations have it, we'll pay whatever they ask to get it and whoever is in charge will take a huge whack out of our pockets at the same time.

It'd be nice if someone got into power and cut fuel duty in half, but with the amount of money it hauls in it'd be political suicide. So it's not likely

Either way, when you rule the world, can I have a Yamaha instead of a KTM?

No - non KTM riders will be put up against the wall and shot. Harsh but fair

I have worked in one way or another with the oil business for twenty years man & boy and read more papers and books than I care to remember so trust me - supply exceeds demand and in 100 years time this conversation will be repeated by someone, somewhere. Don't be fooled by the propaganda you are being spoon fed

I work in the outdoor equipment business and wholeheartedly recommend that we all start walking more as a counter to rising fuel costs. I'll supply the boots!

Right, best go sort some KTM stickers to slap on the Yamaha, just in case you do end up ruling the world!

fuel costs pence, tax is the killer find me an alternative and I'll use it, but the government has no incentive to invest in the alternatives becaue of the massive revenue fuel duty brings in. You won't solve the food crisis by telling people to eat less, you need to find better ways of producing and distributing it and ways of wasting less of it. Equally you won't reduce the use of fossil fuels by telling people to drive less. If you want to walk crack on, I'll take the car!

Anyway, the Government has no authority, we are ruled by unelected fatcats paid for by that fuel duty and the other appalling taxes we pay.

the tax doesn't bring in a useful revenue really, because it's just absorbed into the massive cost of running UK PLC. that's why they can't drop it, it's already spent on other things. the oil companies pay bugger all tax as well, a bit like the banks; but we're supposed to feel thankful for their presence.

do you really have a '68 Minor ? I have a '72 MG B, and the cost of a tank of fuel is getting silly...

Filled my Daf 95 xf superspace cab today and nearly sh@ my pants. £360 but on friday it cost £328.

Anybody want to buy my timber truck and trailer?

So will now have fuel bill of £2k + this week.

Thank god going RTW next month.

It's easy to look a the price at the pumps and sigh at another penny or two. But to be honest when you are sticking £20, £30 or even £50 in the tank it doesn't make that much difference.

Then you get someone who fills up every day and it looks worse. Taxi drivers, delvery vans etc

Then you see the difference a few pence makes to a truck driver and it kinda put it into perspective a little more - £32 difference over a weekend! I've gotten utterlt p!$$ed with less than that!

What amazes me is the fuel protests a few years ago were because of prices nearly half of what it is today.... and today we are just accepting it.

that cos in the UK we dont stick together unlike france who would go on strike and every body would be out and the ports blockaded.... Vive La France.

Except the fuel in France isn't that much cheaper than the UK. Certainly wasn't in August anyway...

A friend went to France last summer and said petrol on the autoroute was actually more expensive that UK motorways, the grass isn't always greener.

Petrol is about the same price in France as the UK. I was there last weekend. Motorway prices are over 1.50 eur, supermarkets approaching 1.40.
Diesel is still about 15 to 20c cheaper than petrol.
