Hi mollydog
My partners DR was a 1997 se from the united states, you are right in saying to check the fuel and carb first i did this over a 4 month period while on the road in SA, and could not find the problem it was only after having a  with a guy from the USA, he told me about this fault and said that he had had the same problem.I bought my DR new in 07 in Australia after 25000ks i noticed that the Reg & Rec had come loose, i think that vibration may play a part in the problem i rubber mounted mine just to be on the safe side.
