Clutch problems or what?

I've just bought an old DR750s and intend to use it for doing some travelling through Morrocco etc, next year. In the mean time I need to learn how to fix it.
So far my mechanical expertise goes as far as fitting a new battery. (which i did by necessity last night).

The next thing that seems to be a problem with the clutch. When I accellerate hard (like if Im overtaking someone) the engine revs up as I would expect it to, but the bike doesnt actually accelerate at a corrisponding rate (it does accellerate, but just really slowly). Then after a few seconds of reving up to 6500 rpm, the revs drop back to about 5000 rpm and the bike keeps accellerating (and the revs climb back up towards 6500 rpm at the same rate). Its a bit like driving an automatic car that cant find the right gear.

Any thoughts?

Next thing, if it is a clutch, does anyone know where I can get a new one, and also the tool I need to fit the thing. (based in the UK but anywhere in europe would be ok)

Sounds like your clutch is slipping.

You may get away with new springs but if you're planning any sort of major trip, fit new plates in addition to new springs. Fit a new (lubed) cable while you're at it & keep the old one as a spare if it's any good.

Nice description of the problem and I couldn't have written it better, since I am experiencing the exact same thing.

The only weird thing is that it started the day I had an oil change done...
So at first I thought it had something to do with the oil or the shop that did it.

Thinking about, my DR clutch did slip after an oil change but only for the first few miles if using plenty of throttle? After that, no problems. This was a few years ago, so please excuse my failing memory.

almost definately clutch slip. even if provoked a bit by the oil, still indicitive of a knackered clutch.

get a new one, soak in mineral BIKE OIL for a day before fitting. replace springs and oil clutch cable as well. will be cured.

don't know about the DR, but a clutch can usually be changed with the bike on teh sidestand without draining the oil. put on sidestand leaning away from you on a slight downhill, take off engine cover, undo 4 or 5 small bolts on the top of the clutch, take the old plates out, and replace with new ones, refit clutch top with new springs, put side cover back on (if gasket broke use a 1mm smear of silicon bathroom sealent instead).

www.thefastone.co.uk do a kit for 58 quid for yours. have delt with in teh past and trust them.

Would anyone in Europe be able to supply the part number for the clutch set for a DR600 1987 ??

Here they're having problems finding that part...for the DR600.

I know that the Dr600 wasn't built here, but a simular MC called th SP600 (until 1985), only with a smaller tank...
I was/am able to use all other parts from that model.. Only now, the Suzuki guys are being unsure and don't want to order it, unless I buy it either way (if it's the right one or not)

I'll do some investigating myself, now.
Lets see who's faster.....
