Gas bottle refill in Namibia?
We found difficulties in South-Africa to get a refill of our European camping (cooking) gas bottles (butan); apparently they use a completely different system, as a result whereof we are almost out of gas while we are heading north now.
Does anyone know if we can get our refill in Namibia or further north? |

I've heard of this problem, to my knowledge, Namibia has the same problem, you might find an adaptor, but most people I seen on the road, end up buying a complete new gas bottle.

I've filled up my camping gaz bottles a couple of times now as well in Windhoek as in Luderitz a month ago. It's a bit hit and miss but try any company with an Afrox sign and you should get it in the end.

You can get European bottles filled at the Afrox place in Windhoek. Stand clear as it's a great African bodge & you don't want to be around when it goes bang!!

Have always found that the ZA bottles have different adaptors to the uk ones so it is probably safer (and less expensive in the long run ) to buy a Cadac bottle and sell? it when you leave the area.
We used the good old Trangia alongside a wood fire for all our cooking. Margaret |

Camping gaz bottles cannot be filled in NAM or ZAR, totally different system, you need not only a thread adapter but also one with a prutruding end that pushes down the ball valve in the Camping Gaz bottle, been there, done that... only solution is to invest 500 rands / dollars and get a new bottle.

Thanks a lot for all these replies.
Taniyamorris, how about Habari's statement that Camping Gaz bottles cannot be refilled in Namibia? Did you use the same camping gaz system? |

I found out myself today: Afrox in Windhoek does refill Camping Gaz bottles. Very easy and very fast. Price is +/- 100 N$ for 5 kg. It's LPG and it can be used for cooking and can even be mixed with the leftover Butane in the gas bottle.
Habari, thanks a lot for the tip and coordinates. |
