Alternative Emergency Medical Care Sources

For those of us who decide to explore countries, remote areas or just roads less traveled, there maybe a potential Emergency Medical Support group in that area. I have worked in the International Emergency Medical Field in a number of remote regions of foreign countries and understand how this process works.

European and Western based International Companies especially working in the Petroleum and Mining industries, have on many of their remote locations, excellent Emergency Medical facilities and personnel. This is required as part of their medical support coverage for expatriate employee’s. These companies have the ability to respond, treat and evacuate sick and injured victims to designated Western or European standard type trauma centers. As part of these companies emergency air medi-vac contingency plans, many of these companies will use the same Emergency Air Medi-vac contract company as would the Travel Health Insurance companies.

When planning a remote trip especially to a country where you know has little or no modern emergency health care, it is well worth a little further investigation to find out if there is any International companies working in the same area. Just to be clear on this point ... these International Companies are not going to openly advertise free emergency medical support for the unsuspecting traveler.

Speaking from past personal experience ... we have on occasion assisted and treated non-nationals traveling through the foreign country we were stationed in. Not to let the cat out of the bag sorta speak ... when buying medical travel insurance from whom ever, you may want to subtly query the representative if they have any major company clients in or near where your traveling. I can also say with certainty that in ever third world major city where there is large International company interests ... these companies will have their own Emergency Medical clinic’s.

Safe Travels
