Try the shipping section for options on shipping from India to Europe.

You would need to go to a major port or airport to arrange shipping or airfreight. I don't recall there being anything in Amritsar. Best option would be New Delhi.

Btw why stop in Amritsar? :confused1: There is so much to see in India and Nepal... think the Hiimalayas or southern India via the palaces of Rajasthan.

As a side note do not use Gati.
I could go on for hours about it but suffice to say they are not use to transporting motorcycles, and will call the police when you take your bike from there depot without paying "extra" charges!
Good job the police are slow to respond

Hei Bhupinder, to travel overland through Middle East, Iran, Pakistan and India you will have to arrange a Carnet de Passage, a large deposit, redeemable when your vehicle returns to your country of origin, or is a proven complete write-off. Leaving a country, like India, without the vehicle imported by you could be a problem. It will be on their computers - as soon as your passport is swiped, you will have some explaining to do. The Customs will see this as an evasion of import duties, unless you can prove you are coming back and the Carnet is valid for this period.
Sending the bike by sea be aware of the extra charges at the other end, no agreement made in India with the shipper is valid at the port of entry. My advice is to oversee the construction and packing of the transport crate yourself, I didn’t, and was surprised at the totally useless construction that arrived in Oslo, literally falling apart, and that was before I saw that someone had cut the brake pipe to get the front mudguard off. To be fair to Mathew Dias of Lynn Packers and Movers of Panjim the paperwork and customs procedure was impeccable, there was a very senior signature on the export side of the carnet, and the usual demands for baksheesh at the airport were absent.
I have heard, but not experienced, that air freight out of Khatmandu, is the cheapest and easiest.
Have a good ride, it is one of the classic trips.
Peter, in Oslo

The Indian Customs have computers??!! :confused1:This is news to me!!!

All I saw at the two border crossings and many checkpoints (in Kashmir) was a lot of paper work.

I think the only problem with leaving the bike will be if there is something stamped in the passport and the fact ask GSPeter said that you have a potentially big deposit for the CDP.

Membership - help keep us going!

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.

You don't have to be a Member to come to an HU meeting, access the website, or ask questions on the HUBB. What you get for your membership contribution is our sincere gratitude, good karma and knowing that you're helping to keep the motorcycle travel dream alive. Contributing Members and Gold Members do get additional features on the HUBB. Here's a list of all the Member benefits on the HUBB.
