Hanoi - rental advice - Horizons Unlimited

My girlfriend and I are planning to go to Hanoi in mid January for two to three weeks. We've heard the north is more spectacular (but open to suggestions).

Im particularly interested in any advice on where/how to rent (or buy) a bike. Or what type. Should we risk a Minsk?

I've been lucky renting and travelling around Thailand and Cambodia in past years. But a couple of years ago, I went into Burma and was not able to rent a bike at all.

Advice appreciated.

did biking in VN a couple of times in the last 10 years with Minsk.
go for a Minsk, they are easily repaired everywhere and parts available in shops.
do a google search on Minsk club Vietnam. sorry don't have the link on this laptop.

Thanks Butch. Good to hear a vote of confidence in the Minsk. I checked out the Hanoi Minsk Club website. It's great. It's gonna have to be a Minsk...Hope it can handle two up...up the mountains, with some (not much) luggage. One day I'll get to China.....

You could also approach Voyage Vietnam. I had a great trip with them on a well-worn Minsk. They will rent or you can talk to the rental shop directly across from their office in Hanoi. Motorcycle, 4x4 Tours & Adventures in Vietnam, Laos, Cambodia, Thailand and China

We travelled for to days in northern Vietnam and I actually got to like the Minsk. Certianly well suited for the off-road stuff. Also, I don´t think much else over 125cc is allowed on the road there.
